Walt Whitman, a poet who lived and created his works during a time of great optimism in The United States, was part of a generation whose legacy included several wars, but that also included many innovations and positive moves forward. Would he, and other notable forefathers, find America to be the same shining example that they believed in so many years ago? Song of Myself is one of Whitmans most notable works. In it he celebrates the nation and the many people who have come together from diverse backgrounds to form a strong union. He is optimistic that the United States will continue to be strong in the future. It has to be said that he would still be proud of the United States in that she has become a world leader (which she was not during his day and time). America still continued to provide shelter, sustenance, and safety to numerous immigrants who are fleeing oppression and starvation in their home countries. There is still much in America to be proud about. And, yet, even during Whitmans time he observed that possibility that material wealth and gain would begin to take precedence over mans humanity. In an attempt to state many of the same concerns and insights as previous nature poets and against the threat of a materialism that seems to be viewed as a destructive force capable of claiming the human soul, Walt Whitman incorporated universal truths through his depiction of nature. Perhaps this is in response to the increased growth in the cities, resulting in an encroachment on nature, which forced much of the natural life into the perimeters of the cities.
