based practice (EBP), in its most basic form, combines clinical expertise on an individual basis with "the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research," (Sackett, 1996; 71). In other
words, when used properly, EBP helps a clinician or health care provider back up his/her expertise and guidelines with information that supports it. This, in turn, helps improve clinical effectiveness
as well as the efficient and effective delivery of healthcare by combining research, clinical guidelines and outcomes assessments into clinical practice (Evidence Based Practice, 2005).
EBP involves creating a good clinical question, finding the evidence to answer that question through effective search techniques and formulating an answer based on experience and the
research. What are the benefits of EBP? The benefits, or advantages, of EBP is that it leads to more positive patient
outcomes, as the information used to make decisions is the current information. Furthermore, EBP helps aid in decision-making; its a lot easier to make a dedicated decision about a patient
or procedure when its known that someone else, with the same situation, has made the same decision and had a positive outcome.
What are the challenges of EBP? There are a couple of challenges, one of which is that EBP can be time-consuming. If a decision is required immediately, this
could be an issue - many times, health care practitioners simply dont have the time or wherewithal to dig through literature or research. Second is that EBP depends on a
