His study, involving traveling with a Chinese couple for a two-year period across the U.S. and noting the responses to his friends, ended up proving to be a ground-breaking study on how what people say may not be necessarily the same thing as what people do. While we take that for granted today (thanks to LaPiere and his subsequent followers), its interesting to see what the field of sociology and behavioral psychology was prior to LaPieres study. Its also interesting to note that LaPiere was not the first one to question the assumption of symbolic actions versus real actions. This paper will examine both the field of social psychology and its origins and beliefs, and how those beliefs led up to LaPieres study. Social psychology, in its most basic form, involves the study of interaction, in other words, how people react toward and treat one another (Wei, 2004). But for background information, its extraordinarily helpful to go back to the turn of the 20th century, when Charles A. Ellwood wrote his article about the need for social psychology. In his article, Ellwood explains the basis of the importance of measuring attitude when it comes to society and how people in it behave toward one another (Ellwood, 1899). First, he outlined that psychology, which was defined as the "science of behavior," had little to do with behavior, has limiting "the notion of behavior to the observable movements is unwarranted" (Ellwood, 1899).
