An artist who typifies and embodies all that the Romantic era is, Delacroix left behind as his legacy a heritage that is rich, luxurious, and full of meaning, depth, and
color. His famous piece, The Death of Sardanapalus, stands as a ready example of his extreme talent. Who is Delacroix? Extremely talented. Extremely passionate. Extremely
hated by the established Salon artists. Delacroix was an enigma unto himself. His earlier influences, by his own admission, were Rubens and Michelangelo, to name a few. These two artists,
in particular, are readily spotted in such works as Sardanapalus. As most romanticists were prone to do, his subjects tended toward those of the mythological, literary and the religious.
Delacroixs Death of Sardanapalus, due to its graphic content was condemned by the established artists of the Salon, even though a scant few years before,
they had hailed him as a genius(Smith 65). However, their fickle epitaphs did not find purchase. Government and religions organizations continued to request and commission works from him.
Later, Delacroix would travel to Monaco where he would be heavily influenced by the rich and luxurious colors, textures and spices of the area. One can
see these influences in his depiction of the legend of Sardanapalus. Delacroix, like any good author, was immediately drawn to the conflict and the action within a tale or
a legend. He often took scenes from Shakespeare or famous poems and depicted them at the height of conflict. What resulted, then, were strong paintings which suggested great power and
