It would be reasonable to assert that the integration of the European Community has been something which could be considered as problematic, given the diversity of the
member states and the difficulties inherent in achieving social, political and economic unity as a result of the extent of such diversity. There have been a number of ways in
which the EU has looked towards increasing its internal cohesion, and developing a more holistic format in terms of its domestic and foreign policies, including greater economic union and the
extension of common social policies across all the member states, some of which have been more successful than others.
In terms of social policy, the overt aim has been to formulate and maintain
parameters within which the community can function as a whole, without suffering the negative impact of variations in social equality between the member state, and to this end there has
been legislation regarding such issues as employment, womens rights, discrimination and so on. Given the economic and cultural differences between the member states, it is accepted that the formation of
such policies is bound to suffer discrepancies and setbacks: it is difficult to establish a level playing field across such a broad range of political and economic entities without causing
further inequalities rather than alleviating those which already exist.
