of time. These truths may be presented in the cultural context in which they find themselves, but beneath the social trappings and historical rhetoric lies the truth, or the elementary idea. Interestingly enough, these same elementary truths, more or less, still serve to act as guideposts for modern man. This was also evidence by the work of Carl Jung, his work with symbols and cultural archetypes. Given this, then, a good case can be made for ethnology existing as a form of anthropology. Carl Jung, whom Campbell seems to be quite influenced by, stated that myths and their elementary ideas arose from a shared collective unconsciousness, and that inherited feelings, thoughts and memories are commonly shared by all of mankind. This collective unconscious, states Jung, is made up of various archetypes, elementary ideas of people, that appear in a cultures religions, myths, fairy tales and stories. These stories, then, become a part of the cultural element, which in turn becomes anthropological in nature via the ethnology. The elementary idea, for example, could be that of birth, death and renewal which is seen in most of the myths throughout the world, and is manifested even in many cultures main religions. This is also symbolic of the four seasons in which there is a planting, harvesting and barren time.
