Asarco covering air pollution and Synertexs proposed plant posing a certain threat toward Monarch Butterflies. Both of these case studies focus on environment vs. business development. In here, we are
asked to apply concepts of Considerability and Expected Utility. (Fjelsted and Kristensen, 2002). Considerability notes that decisions should include every little thing
(including the moral side) when deciding on a project (Fjelsted and Kristensen, 2002). Expected Utility, on the other hand, tries to maximize the utility - in other words, the greatest
good for the greatest number Expected Utility (Fjelsted and Kristensen, 2002). When it comes to Considerability, both companies need to be extremely aware of the pros and cons of their
decision - and if Considerability were used, likely as not, Asarco would clean up its act totally while Synertex would decide not to build the plant near the Monarch Butterflies.
But Expected Utility would dictate just the opposite - Asarcos leaving things the way they are would end up having a greater benefit to the community (even if a few
of them do die of cancer, this would be outweighed by the number who are working and have paychecks). So then would Synertex building the plant - moreso - because
the issue with Synertex isnt few versus many, but rather, butterflies versus man. Expected Utility dictates that the butterflies are expendable.
The Precautionary Principle is very controversial whether applied to the environment or to bio-technological innovations. Is it a sound principle to apply? Discuss with reference to one major problem in
