Motors and Chrysler Corp. For years, these three companies had been struggling against the leaner foreign automakers that didnt have the labor costs that the U.S. manufacturers did. So when executives from the Big Three approached Congress during November 2008 to plead their cause for a government handout, there were plenty of skeptical eyebrows raised both in the chambers of Congress and among much of the American population. But that skepticism turned to outrage when it was learned that, despite the executives claims of trimming down, cutting back and trying to go for lean, they took private corporate jets to the hearings, rather than springing for commercial airline tickets (Puzzanghera and Simon, 2008). As the executives attempted to justify their need for $25 billion in emergency loans, the corporate flying habits kept coming to the forefront (Puzzanghera and Simon, 2008). "Theres a delicious irony in seeing private luxury jets flying to Washington DC and people coming off of them with tin cups in their hands, saying that theyre going to be trimming down and streamlining their businesses," Rep. Gary Ackerman of New York was quoted as saying. (Puzzanghera and Simon, 2008, C1). The main problem with this aspect was that these executives were asking for taxpayer money to help bail them out of their own mistakes of mismanagement over the many years. Though spokesmen for the Big Three claimed that private jet travel in the automotive industry is standard, and is used for safety, critics werent buying it (Tharp, 2008).
