A decade ago, Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and YouTube didnt exist - the Internet was more or less a vehicle for research, information and e-commerce. These days, however, the Internet has
become a way to socialize with everyone; from your college roommate to a colleague on the other side of the world. However, with
that method of socialization comes large ethical questions about behavior on a social networking site - especially if that networking site is used for business purposes. There are questions brought
up by Kroenke in his text MIS Essentials that deal with this very issue in his section entitled "Hiding the Truth?" Lets examine some of the questions he poses -
and formulate some responses to these issues. Lets say, for example, that Majestic launches a group on a social networking site for a
rafting trip - and Graham, the 15-year-old college student who started the chapter, decides to use the group to attract women at his college to go on the trip. To
add to the "allure," Graham decides to put up a picture of a 22-year-old male model (representing himself), and makes outrageous claims about his own abilities. If someone went on
the trip based on Graham and his postings, would Majestic have the responsibility to refund that persons fees? Lets say a couple of things here. First of all, Graham was
dishonest in doing what he did. But second of all, anyone who goes on a river rafting trip solely because of the looks of someone - especially if those looks
are seen only online - is solely responsible for her actions. If Majestic were a dating site, and Graham was being offered as a "product," the scenario might be different.
