populations living in developing countries in Africa. River Blindness is caused by worms, living in small, black flies, and when the larvae enter human hosts, they cause horrific symptoms from
intense itching to blindness. Drugs-R-Us has a potential medicine that could combat River Blindness. The problem, however, is that Drugs-R-Us is facing
a long-term commitment of resources and time to develop and market the drug, with little hope of any kind of return. The disease impacts a small number of people in
one of the poorest parts of the world, meaning those suffering from the disease would not be able to pay for the medication.
This situation is a common one faced by pharmaceutical companies. Because it takes more than $200 million and more than a decade to bring pharmaceuticals from concept to market, and
because resources are not infinite, the companies are required to pick and choose; to select those projects that are going to yield the most profit over the long term.
The key stakeholders in the River Blindness case are, of course, those who suffer from the disease. Also in this collection are the governments
of the countries in Africa that have this problem; any difficult-to-eradicate disease can take its toll on a governments resources. The other is Drugs-R-Us, in that it would have to
devote the time, resources and personnel toward bringing this particular drug to market, with the sure knowledge that it wont yield much, if any, kind of profit. But other stakeholders
