the January 20, 2008 edition of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. The article covers the fact that agribusiness companies Monsanto and Dow AgroSciences managed to convince the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency
(MCPA) to not only allow acetochlor, a farm chemical washing into rivers, to remain, but decided to allow more than twice the concentration of the chemical in the rivers than
originally proposed. The result is that three of the five rivers the state had previous dubbed "impaired" by the chemical (including a popular trout stream) will not be considered polluted.
There are several alarming ramifications by the way this whole issue was handled. What ethical issues should Dow and Monsanto be considering in this situation?
The entire issue that is being discussed in this article is how much acetochlor is too much when it comes to the states rivers and
streams. The MCPA had originally set a standard of 1.7 parts per billion after years of laborious research. But after being shown the light by Dow and Monsanto researchers, the
agency changed its mind, noting that 3.6 parts per billion was perfectly okay for the chemical. Though well never know what both
companies did to compel the states capitulation so quickly, there are a few ethical issues that both Dow and Monsanto need to consider, one of which is the wildlife. Acetochlor
is known to have a dire influence on the areas flora - and too much of any pesticide can cause problems. Without vegetation, animals move elsewhere. This could have a
definite impact (and not a good one) on the ecosystem. What also has been overlooked in this entire thing is that people
