must fire a friend who works for the company. Though the friend has performed very well, the company lost a contract with a major client, which means cutbacks.
The friend, however, is taking advantage of the friendship by asking the writer to lie for him when a mortgage company calls to request verification
of his employment with the company, so he can obtain a home loan. This request follows on another favor hes asked, which is to extend his employment for 10 more
days so he can qualify for the loan. The friend is, basically, asking the writer to lie on his behalf; to falsify information regarding his employment so he can benefit.
This is no friend - and it would be unethical for the writer to falsify the information and to lie. Its not difficult to come up with the idea that
lying is bad, and shouldnt be done. One could argue, however, that this is a "good" lie - in other words, its a
lie to help a friend out of a difficult spot. From a philosophical viewpoint, lying is defined as "saying something that one believes to be false, with the intent to
deceive" (Fallis, 2009; 29). Falls (2009) in his article about lying and the ethics of lying, goes on to suggest that individuals will sometimes go on the record with a
falsehood, even though there is no intent to deceive. Lying, in and of itself, is regarded as a terrible thing. Most people,
when asked if they would lie, react in horror, saying of course they wouldnt. Yet almost everyone has told a "white lie," in other words, small lies that are meant
