comes to accounting, and for good reason. Accountants, who are members of a self-regulated profession, are responsible for presenting truthful financial reports to the public -- as well as the
organizations for which they work (Venezia, 2005). The reason is fairly straightforward -- management depends on accurate numbers to make decisions about where future allocation of resources should go. The
public in the meantime, needs accurate numbers to determine whether an organization is worthwhile for investment. If there are ethical lapses when
it comes to numbers, this ends up shaking the confidence of investors and the system (Arnott, 2004). This was the case with Enron -- most investors are casting a wary
eye, these days, toward financial statements, concerned that the numbers may not be necessarily false, but may not be adding up to truth, either.
The problem comes down to, however, the ability of accountants and their ethical reasoning abilities. Venezia, for example, believes that such abilities are more of a cultural phenomenon,
with accounting practitioners in Taiwan, for example, better able to use their ethical reasoning abilities than those in the U.S. But what,
exactly, is the definition of ethics in general? This has been a sticking point among not only philosophers, but also the business community (and Congress) in the wake of the
Enron scandal. Ethics, for the most part, is connected to the assessment of right and wrong - no one will disagree with that (Arnott, 2004). The problem, however, is the
