used to believe that a company was responsible for conforming to the society in which it is located, changed her mind when her company declined to open a manufacturing branch
in South African because of Apartheid laws. Although Apartheid is gone, Mary now faces two strategic decisions that could impact the companys bottom
line. The company has an opportunity to buy clothing manufactured in Pakistan - but Mary suspects that much of the clothing is manufactured by girls under the age of 14.
Marys company also has an opportunity to open a plant in Saudi Arabia - but women would not be allowed in executive positions.
The question Mary faces is what other companies face as they strive to compete globally. Doing the right thing might sound great on paper, but when it comes to the
bottom line, it doesnt mean much. In addition, there is the feeling that such abuses and ethical problems are going to continue anyway - so why shouldnt Marys company take
