most basic form, involves the process of shaping behavior by controlling the consequences of a particular behavior or attion (Reinforcement Theory, 2009). The four types of reinforcement are positive, negative,
punishment and extinction (Reinforcement Theory, 2009). Positive reinforcement occurs when a valued reaction to the behavioral consequence boosts the probability that the
behavior will be repeated (Reinforcement Theory, 2009). In a work situation, awarding an employee with a bonus or day off is an example of positive reinforcement. With the reward, the
employee is likely to repeat the good behavior (i.e., meet the next goal). Negative reinforcement, on the other hand, withholds something to
create a desired behavior, in hopes that the behavior will occur (Reinforcement Theory, 2009). For example, the salesperson that exerts efforts to increase sales in a particular sales territory, then
is followed by the decision not to reassign the sales person to another undesirable territory is one way in which negative reinforcement works (Reinforcement Theory, 2009). The key to positive
reinforcement is that of learning and repeating a particular behavior (Reinforcement Theory, 2009). The concept behind punishment and extinction, however, is to
decrease the probability of specific behaviors (Reinforcement Theory, 2009). Punishment is withholding something desirable (or putting forth something distasteful) with the purpose of trying to change non-desirable behavior (Reinforcement Theory,
2009). The worker who punches in late and is docked is an example of punishment in an attempt to change an undesirable behavior. The assumption is that if the employee
loses money, he or she will try to be more prompt the next time around. Finally, extinction is similar to punishment, in
