The posts in this discussion thread that seemed to this writer/tutor to be the most instructive were the ones that related to collaborative processes to a dance. However,
it also seems clear to this writer/tutor that many of the future ESL student teachers were anxious and/or nervous because they anticipated having to learn the "steps" of this dance
simply through observation. As one student observed, "it is tricky because it is not your classroom, and yet you will be expected to understand it." Therefore, in responding
to the issues raised in this online thread, the writer/tutor suggests referring to literature and the ways in which teacher collaboration can be used to accomplish common goals. For example,
Brownell and colleagues indicate that "Teachers learning and working together to achieve common goals is considered by many scholars to be a central element of major school reform efforts" (Brownell,
et al 169). Therefore, it seems reasonable for a student teacher to ask for a conference with the teacher/mentor at some point early on in the practicum process in
order to inquire precisely what that teachers goals and objectives are and how that teacher imagines that the student teacher might help in achieving those goals. In other words, this
writer/tutors suggestions is for the student teacher to ask for a "dance lesson" in order to aid the student in assimilating the class culture and objectives more effectively. The writer/tutors
second suggestion is for the student teacher to ask for and remain open to regular critical feedback from the teacher/mentor. In other words, ask for regular critiques for your "dancing,"
with specific regard as to how you are fitting into this classrooms particular "dance." Teaching Pronunciation: ...how do we are language teachers incorporate achievable and meaningful pronunciation teaching in
