Germany, both men were so-called "external philosophers," in other words, their focus was in the life in the real world, rather than some foggy or hazy hereafter. Though both were
external philosophers, they different in that Epictetus belief tended toward accepting what one could not change, while Nietzsche was a believer in questioning everything, especially those things ordinarily explained through
commonly-accepted values. For Nietzsche, the response of "weve always done things like that before" would not be acceptable, though Epictetus wouldnt have a problem with that thought.
But one question we can ask ourselves is how does (or doesnt) the "real world" impact Epictetus and Nietzsches views about morality and being (aka
ontology?) To answer this question, it would first be a good idea to discuss what these two philosophers beliefs were insofar as morality and existence. Epictetus main belief were that
humans were in control of their own destinies, noting that cultivating an understanding that sometimes humans have no control over external events can create a calm and balanced life (Kemerling,
2006). His belief is also that self-discipline is the only key to understanding what is in our power and what is not in our power, as well as understanding how
to combine rational and irrational, and accept it in ones life (Epictetus, 2004). Throughout his first published book Discourses, in fact, Epictetus demonstrates how paradoxes can exist in the same
space or point of time (Epictetus, 2004). Nietzsche, however, tended to shun the approach of "if its there, therefore it must be,"
which is what Epictetus spouted. Nietzsches stock thought and belief about morality and being involved the need to dig back in time and see how time tends to rewrite history.
