Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This paper discusses the trend of eco-taxation, by which municipalities and federal governments put taxes on waste and use of dangerous fuels. The paper argues that such methods, while helpful in encouraging use of recycling and use of cleaner energy, is not effective on its own as a deterrent to pollution. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

discouraging use of underarm deodorant in spray cans (because of possible damage to the ozone layer) and use of detergents with phosphates (as phosphates caused water pollution). These days, however,
the battle for clean air and water has moved beyond shelving boxes of Tide and wearing roll-ons. That the skies are hazy because of emissions spewed into them, there is
little doubt. That water in some places is undrinkable because of chemicals is also true. And that landfills around the world are reaching capacity is also a fact.
In order to control the waste of the ever-growing society in which we live, some economists would like to see countries implement and maintain
an eco-tax - mainly a tax on actions to promote a green, clean economy. By making it cost more to pollute water, note the economists, such a tax could drive
people and industry toward a more efficient, cleaner way of burning fuel. While this idea sounds very good in theory, in reality,
its lukewarm at best. This paper will attempt to provide examples as to how effective eco-taxes have been in cleaning up the environment. Overview of Eco-Taxes
It should come as no surprise that interest in energy taxes in order to regulate the environment has grown during the past decade or so (Muller,
1996) - interesting, considering the environmental movement actually got its start in 1963, with the advent of Rachel Carsons book Silent Spring, about the dangers of DDT in the air
and the water. Part of the reason for the more recent interest in blending environment with economics is because there has been
