help him or herself. The criminal grew up in a ghetto, where gangs and drive-by shootings were a fact of life. He/she was also the child of a single mother,
who struggled to keep things together. If only that family had lived in an upper-middle-class neighborhood, perhaps the criminal wouldnt have felt the need to commit crimes. The environment was
to blame for his/her familys dysfunction. But then there are the stories that arent quite as widely publicized, likely because they arent
as newsworthy; namely the ones in which individuals come from fairly stable families, despite the fact those families live in decaying neighborhoods. And this brings us to the question of
what, if any impact, an environment has on family dynamics, function or dysfunction. The contention here is that while the external environment does have some impact on family dynamics, its
not the only factor. Furthermore, families that show a desire to excel despite their external circumstances will find a way to tie into the communitys support system and its structure.
The literature, on the surface, seems to not support this idea. Chan et al (2009) point out that for three decades,
researchers have been able to tie environmental factors into family dysfunction; demonstrating, for example, that families in which violence is prevalent tend to be "socially isolated from formal and informal
support systems" (p. 360). On the other hand, Lynch and Weirsema (2001) point to the fact that family dynamics themselves, as
