a definite impact on this industry during the next three to five years. The pharma industry grew by 5.3% in 2009 and was valued at just over one billion dollars (Global Pharmaceuticals, 2010). The market forecast is that this industry will continue on a fast pace, increasing in value by 31% by 2014 - meaning a value in excess of $1.4 billion (Global Pharmaceuticals, 2010). The competitive landscape shows an industry that is very fragmented, despite its control by a handful of large, international players (Global Pharmaceuticals, 2010). Buyer power is diminished due to patent protection, though generic drugs tend to erode this power when patents expire (Global Pharmaceuticals, 2010). In this industry, buyers can range from retail outlets to managed care organizations, with the latter having huge purchasing power and are influenced by demands for more cost-effectiveness (Global Pharmaceuticals, 2010). Suppliers, in the meantime, are manufacturers of active pharmaceutical ingredients and chemical manufacturers - much of the pharma industry purchases its raw materials from a variety of suppliers (Global Pharmaceuticals, 2010). Though the pharmaceutical industry has raked in billions, and though activist groups continue to call for cost constraints among Big Pharma companies, this is an industry that has experienced some large challenges, internally and externally, over the years (Marketwatch-Pharmaceuticals, 2009). Issues such as reduced efficiency of companies internal research and development processes and increasingly crowded markets (thanks to generic drugs) has meant a lot of price competition (Marketwatch-Pharmaceuticals, 2009).
