more often than not, these readings will state something like "most business is done in English" or "most hotels and tourism areas have English-speaking staff." Though some linguistics some years ago attempted to build Esperanto (a mishmash of the worlds languages) as the international language to use, that effort never really took off. These days, most of the major countries, and some of the minor ones as well, in the world use English to conduct business or tourism activities. Held (2004) in his book "A Globalizing World" points out that English as a worldwide language is part of a broader cultural imperialism argument (p. 63). Most of what passes for global culture these days, he points out, ranging from Coca-Cola to Hollywood, is made in the USA. In many areas of the world, three-quarters of imported television is originated in the United States. "Language, of course, is central to this patterning," Held continues on pg. 63. He goes on to call English the "language of advantage," then explains this makes a great deal of sense. After all, thanks to U.S. imperialism and that perpetrated by the British Empire through much of the 18th through 20th centuries, English has spread ubiquitously throughout the world (Held, 2004). As a result of this, he concludes, the globalization of culture isnt so much the growth of a global culture, but rather, the spreading, in English, of US and western goods, services and practices (p. 63).
