get a whole host of different reactions. In recent years, a lot of emotion has surrounded end of life issues, ranging from Jack Kevorkian (aka "Doctor Death") and his views
on assisted suicide, to the furor over the potential that health care reform will end up leading to rationed health care which, in turn, will end up "pulling the plug
on granny." This latter was the fear of ultra-conservative, far-right groups, but the catchphrase made it nicely into the media. What about children
and end-of-life care? Interestingly enough, this never made it into the health care reform hysteria. In a way, this is too bad.
If end-of-life decisions are made for granny, no one really blinks twice: After all, granny likely had a very fruitful, productive and long life. But what about the five-year-old child
who is diagnosed with terminal cancer and only has a handful of painful months to life? What about the infant born with a sentence of death over her because of
spina bifida or Tay Sachs or Sickle Cell Anemia or some other disease guaranteed to lead to a horrible quality of life?
Though it isnt talked about much, pediatric end-of-life issues are those with which a healthcare leader must deal. End-of-life issues are difficult at best - when it comes to end-of-life
issues and palliative care in the area of pediatrics, such issues are highly emotional, perhaps more so than with granny and her age group. The Issue at Hand
