enterprises that have the greatest potential to impact the level of environment for damages is being done. It may be argued that the increase in environmental management systems (EMS) and
their popularity has coincided with the increased awareness of the need for sustainability. When looking at the EMSs there appears to be a high level of underpinning from the concept
of sustainability. Sustainability and concern for the environment appears to be the motivation the development of EMS. Slide 2 Opinions differ to the precise meaning of sustainability
and environmentalism, no set definition exists, however commonalties include nature conservation, minimisation or elimination of pollution and avoiding the irreversible destruction of aspects of the environment (Chryssides and Kaler, 1998).
Nevertheless sustainability policies do not necessarily incorporate all or any of these factors. The dictionary definition is useful as a starting point, but the Bruntlad report is a useful one
as it looks at the role of sustainable development in the commercial world and what the goals should be, Slide 3 There are number frameworks which can
be utilized when adopting environmental management, these include IOS 14001, the international standard for environmental management systems and EUs Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), the European equivalent. EMAS has
certain equivalents in each of the European member states, such as an equivalent British Standard BS5550. There are commonalities between both of the frameworks, and many companies are able
