to the facilitys board of directors. Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. As you know and understand, our hospital prides itself on efficiency and
effectiveness in terms of patient care and communication. However, wed be remiss if we didnt begin investigating, and discussing the likelihood of implementing EMR technology into our hospital.
What are some advantages of implementation? Well, for one thing, in the current confusing healthcare environment, which offers everything from higher levels of accountability to
multiple-payer systems, a quality EMR would help better streamline the work, data and improve documentation (Block, 2008). Furthermore, it would increase efficiencies when
it comes to dealing with patients - upon check-in, for example, the administrative staff wouldnt have to be seeking out consent for procedure forms or other important forms; all of
that could be input into the system (Block, 2008). That electronic file would then "follow" that patient through his or her procedure, all the way to discharge, follow-up, insurance filing
and billing. All of the doctors comments, the nurses comments, etc., could be input into that electronic file. Its available in one place, where all providers can access it.
This is not to suggest, however, that everything would be rosy with EMR implementation. For one thing, EMR hardware and software are not "out
of the box" items; physicians, nurses and other healthcare providers will be required to carry out many time-consuming activities (such as training) to master the technology (Miller and Sim, 2004).
Another disadvantage is there isnt much in the way of incentive for healthcare providers to use EMR (Miller and Sim, 2004). There isnt
