Whether the economy is good or bad, employees leaving either as the result of a firing or resignation does many things. It means a company needs to spend resources trying
to find a replacement and train that person (even if an employee is let go because of poor performance, this is still the case). It means the company has lost
its investment in an employee. It also means that, depending on the reason why the employee left, the company could end up with a great deal of bad will from
the employee, who is likely to go into the community and indicate that this company is just not a good one to work for.
It also could mean that the competition ends up getting the benefit of training the company put into the employee. Added to that, employee turnover (if its excessive)
can lead to lost revenues and lost productivity (Rich, 1998). Though all companies experience turnover to a degree, experts note that
annual turnover thats at 20 percent or more is a sign that there are some problems that need fixing (Satava, 2003). But
employee turnover can be avoided, as long as companies understand the causes of turnover, understand their employees and understand what needs to happen to create a more cohesive and understanding
workforce. In this paper, well examine some causes for employee turnover, and make some recommendations. As each company is different, reasons why
