by firing or docking of pay. But during the 20th century, as the employee-organization relationship moved from one of scientific method to a more human orientation, the rules governing employee
discipline and specific rules became more complex. This was further exacerbated by the rise of unions, which were able to band employees together in certain industries and force conditions on
an organizations management. These days, there is an implied psychological contract between employee and employer whenever the latter hires the former (Tekleab
and Taylor, 2003). The psychological contract is fairly straightforward as well; it indicates that the employees obligation to an organization is to do the work he/she was hired for, with
the organizations obligation to the employee involving payment and benefits (Tekleab and Taylor, 2003; see also Abrams and Nolan, 1985). Abrams and Nolan state this issue fairly clearly, when
they point out that "a potential employer is willing to part with his money only in return for something he values more highly . . ." (p. 597). This "something,"
of course, would be satisfactory work, and following of the rules by the employee. Where the problem arises, however, is when disagreement
between parties on reciprocal set of obligations comes into play (Tekleab and Taylor, 2003). The problem becomes even more complex because there is typically uncertainty as to who represents
the organization in this psychological contract (Tekleab and Taylor, 2003). Teklab and Taylor point out, and quite rightfully, that recruiters might
