Spurred on by schools of thought such as Taylorism and theories of bureaucracy, "motivators" were top-down directors from the executive suite. Then came the human relations school, fueled, in part by the famous Hawthorne studies conducted during the 1920s, spearheaded by Mayo, which suggested that if employee needs were met, they would be more motivated to work hard (Mayo and the human relations school). Though the Hawthorne studies were criticized over the years, Mayo and his movement led to more worker-participation theories. Though todays organizations still rely on theories of the bureaucracy, management of many of these organizations recognized that employees are going to be more cooperative if they are satisfied and motivated to work hard. Some management offers extrinsic motivation, such as money, bonuses, benefits and comp time, Others try to tap into employees intrinsic desires to motivate those employees to work hard. In this paper, well discuss motivation from an employee and managerial perspective. More specifically, well discuss the impact age has on motivation.
