satisfied on their jobs, everything else fails as well. Productivity goes down. Customers become dissatisfied (because theyre not getting service or attention from employees). Dissatisfied customers go to the competition.
But what happens if low morale happens in a somewhat non-competitive situation like government or call centers? There is, after all, little
worry about competition in either situation (though there could be an argument that a call center that doesnt produce well wont be in business for long). Still, poor morale means
dissatisfied consumers or customers. It also means high turnover rates in both situations, which doesnt do anyone any good. Lets examine the
extent of the problem. One problem among government employees is that if they arent happy with their jobs in some way, they
dont feel they can tell the truth about their situations (Simmons, 1999). Many employees believe that if they say whats really going on within their agencies or organizations, that theyll
end up in trouble (Simmons, 1999). Theyre likely to experience "public humiliation, intimidation, isolation and recriminations on the job" (Simmons, 1999, p. 55). As a result, these employees believe they
are powerless to do anything, let alone talking about their jobs and their frustrations (Simmons, 1999). Another problem with employee morale among
the governments is the "blame game," the one in which a group of people blame another person or group for failing to implement a new initiative or change direction (Simmons,
