it was felt, would pick up what they needed to on the job, and if they had any questions, they could ask. Some employers, wanting their employees to advance, would
send them for training in their jobs, with the idea that what they learned during the training could be helpful on the job. Some employees did quite well with this
method, others struggled along. But no one really gave a thought to it, that is, until globalization came along and competition heated up. In their quest for a competitive advantage
over their international counterparts, companies began turning to their workforces and human resources departments to improve employee functioning. This led to other tools, such as talent management and employee learning
styles. The difficulty with anything that pertains to human resources is that there is a degree of skepticism involved. Depending on
the decade, fads have come and gone to build the best workforce ever. During much of the 20th century, building that workforce revolved around processes. In other camps, that workforce
was dependent on different types of leadership. So whats to say that the concepts of talent management and employee learning arent the same thing? How are these different from Taylorism
of the 1920s, Total Quality Management and Quality Circles of the 1980s and leadership studies from just about every decade? In
this paper, we contend that understanding an employees learning style is important when it comes to talent management. If a human resources director, and even more importantly, the employee, understands
how informal, on-the-job learning takes place, that employee will have a better chance of being able to do his/her job even better than before.
