behind corporate ethics is that corporations have the responsibility to behave in an upright and honest manner to shareholders, customers, the community and their employees. But while much focus has
been placed on corporate values, little has really been studied about employee values. What is considered "ethical" behavior on behalf of employees? For one thing, employees can consider themselves among
the most ethical in the world - yet they dont hesitate to pilfer office supplies every now and then ("the corporation wont notice, it already has so many"); nor do
other employees hesitate to fudge on their timesheets. Then there is the employee who considers him or herself an upright citizen, yet tells terrible ethnic jokes. Is this considered "ethical"
behavior? One aspect of employee values that needs to be examined is that of trust - not only trust for the superior, but
also trust toward coworkers and the customers. For example, in the minds of many employees, the concept that "the customer is always right" is mainly lip service. Some employees dont
believe that the customer is always right, particularly if the customer is abusive or nasty. Employees should trust that customers are always right - even if they are wrong -
by dint of the fact they are the customers, and they are the ones paying the money for a product or service. Trust
between co-workers is also the sign of high employee values - but unfortunately, such trust can be lacking, particularly among a competitive workplace. For example, as the corrupt accounting procedures
