on the planes, the ground crews and mechanics ensured the plane was safe enough to fly, and gate agents and other administrative personnel focused on getting the passengers through the
ticket-buying and boarding process. However, the advent of technology and competition has changed the role of personnel when it comes to the
airline industry. Competition, especially, has hit many of the airlines hard - and in the wake of 9/11, market forces such as bankruptcies and high fuel costs have also impacted
the airlines abilities to do business. On the other side of the coin, weve seen the advent of paperless tickets and online booking, which is changing the jobs of ticket
agents and, in many cases, baggage handlers. Continental isnt immune to labor, fuel costs or other issues. But it is an
airline that has adopted a couple of models to help face the future - such as its Crew ResourceSolver. Additionally, recognizing that the industry has changed, Continental is focusing on
more of an employee involved scenario, rather than top-down command. Because of the union-busting strife it had experienced in the early 1980s, it was better positioned to implement an employee-involved
program. Continental does, however, face other issues when it comes to recruitment and retention. One is the continuation of gender stereotypes. Though
"stewardesses" have been replaced with the more generic "flight attendant," female pilots arent quite as prevalent, nor are they quite as accepted by their male colleagues. Still, as Continental moves
