Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 25 page paper that begins with an executive summary. This paper investigates the mass storage system industry and EMC's position in the industry. Sections include: EMC and Industry Structure; Industry Analysis using Porter's 5 forces; a simple strategy group map; Evolution of the Industry and trends; Strategy Formulation for EMC and Conclusions. This is an industry that is always changing to meet the demands for more capacity, smaller size, quicker access and lower costs. Thus far, the industry has kept pace with the demands. Three companies hold an aggregate world market share of about 60 percent in both the disk drive and network storage solutions industry. Statistical data are included. 1 Table and 2 illustrations are included. Bibliography lists 15 sources.

system for storing data. It has come a long way since then. This industry has become extremely competitive and only the best have survived. There were nearly 300 companies in
this industry several years ago and now, there are 90. Three companies hold the lions share of the world market: HP, IBM and EMC. They are fierce rivals. The
technology changes so rapidly that the industry is one where each major competitor sometimes launch new products almost simultaneously. The driving forces for innovation are the needs of companies
to store and access more and more information. Over the years, the driving forces have been consistent: greater capacity in smaller disks, fast access and lower prices. Major companies in
the industry have consistently met the demands. An analysis of the industry using Porters five forces reveals a positive environment. In other words, there are no real threats to
the companies as long as they continue to meet consumer and business customer demands. It is far too costly for new companies to enter this industry. EMC and Industry
Structure The most commonly-used storage medium is the magnetic disk. Magnetic disks include hard disks, diskettes and removable disk cartridges. The disks and disk drives are available in many different
types and sizes. The so-called floppy disks are diskettres that are used in personal computers. These can still be found in homes and offices. Diskettes allow for the exchange of
data between locations easy. Disk file units are mass memory units that have removable hard disk packs; these are used with large mainframe computer systems. Fixed disk drives are often
found in personal computers and minicomputers. Hard disks, which are typically mounted permanently inside a computer, are faster and larger than diskettes. These are called fixed disks in mainframes
