demographics of ELT classes are often quite diverse. For example, Margot McCamley explains that she teachers 18 students who range in age from 11 to 15 and all have varying
levels of language ability (McCamley). In order to maintain discipline and accomplish academic goals, McCamley recommends a variety of strategies. First of all McCamley recommends establishing a specific code
of behavior, so that students are aware of the consequences of any behavior that has been designated as socially unacceptable. McCamley always posts the class code of behavior somewhere in
the classroom. This code should be specific, but not overly long, as five or six key features, such as "I will work hard to learn the language," are sufficient to
get across the concept of acceptable classroom behavior (McCamley). Frequently, poor behavior patterns have their origin in the fact that students "do not understand what is being taught to
them" (McCamley). As they find no purpose in the instruction, yet realize that they are failing to learn, they take out their frustration in bad behavior. These students have "missed
vital clues to the learning process" (McCamley). In order to cope with these students, McCamley recommends seating them in the front of the class. This allows McCamley not only to
see them easily, but it also allows her to lightly touch a student on the shoulder who is getting out of hand, rather than issue a verbal reprimand. It also
makes establishing eye contact with these students easier. Good work should be praised, while minor infractions and other forms of bad behavior should be ignored whenever possible
without allowing students to overtly break class rules (McCamley). Do not yell, but rather wait until the class settles down (McCamley). It is sometimes helpful simply to clap ones hands
