With the situational language teaching method, the teacher roles are to set the context and to correct errors and the students roles are to memorize and imitate (Rodgers, 2001). With the audio-lingualism method, the teachers roles are to model language and act as the leader of drill practice and the students roles are to practice the patterns, to gain accuracy and to be enthusiastic (Rodgers, 2001). The communicative language teaching method asks the teacher to be a needs analyst and to design the tasks for the students and the learners roles are to be a negotiator and improvisor (Rodgers, 2001). The teacher takes on the roles of commander and action monitor and the learner takes on the roles of order taker and performer with total physical response (Rodgers, 2001). The method of community language learning changes the teachers roles to counselor and paraphrasher and the learners roles to collaborator and whole person (Rodgers, 2001). The natural approach asks the teacher to be an actor who uses props and the learner to become an immerser and guesser while the suggestopedia method changes the teachers roles to auto-hypnotist and authority figure and the learners roles to relaxer and true believer (Rodgers, 2001). The roles of the teacher and learner change with each method. Methods always expect the actors to behave in certain ways, that is what makes it a method. Based on these roles, this writer is most comfortable with the counselor/paraphrase role, which emerges from the community language learning method.
