elder members of society are one of the largest demographics in the United States. However, even though they are a large segment of society, rules and regulations have not been
forthcoming. On a routine basis the elderly are taken advantage of, even abused, and they have few champions. Elder justice has become a new buzz word over the last few
years, but it is interesting to note that the concept was actually discussed in Shakespeares play, King Lear. Elder Justice is provided for in the Elder Justice Act. This act
protects seniors (aged sixty and above) who are victims of crimes against them, either in the home, by businesses, or in nursing homes(Elder Justice). Abuse or exploitation by family members
or those responsible for care is one of the leading cases filed utilizing the Elder Justice act. Next in line is generally the unscrupulous ways in which businesses prey on
the sensibilities and fears of seniors. Lastly, it protects the elderly against violent crimes such as home invasion and theft. In Shakespeares play, their own family members are betraying
King Lear and the character named, Gloucester. "tis our fast intent / To shake all cares and business from our age, / Conferring them on younger strengths, while we /
Unburdend crawl toward death", states King Lear in the opening act. Having decided to step down from the throne, King Lear has posed the questions to his three daughters, of
whom he plans to divide the kingdom amongst: Tell me how much you love me. Two daughters immediately shower their father with lavish praise. The third daughter says that she
