health records, or EHR, are lacking for a particular patient. At the beginning of this year, my cousin found himself in the hospital suffering from renal failure, sepsis and a
possible heart attack. While he was in the hospital, everything was done to save him - and he was brought back to health.
But the fun began when he began his follow-up appointments with the doctors who had seen him while he was hospitalized. He had four doctors in all: A cardiologist, a
nephrologist, an infectious disease doctor and his primary care physician, who wanted to continue monitoring his blood levels. The problem, however, was that while these doctors were affiliated with the
hospital, they didnt have access to my cousins records. This created all kinds of problems - it meant my cousin had to
fill out a variety of forms at each doctors office, and had to go over his history again and again. When the bills came, this created more hassle - sometimes
my cousin was double-billed for the same procedure and a phone call was required to straighten everything out. Other times, insurance was slow to pay, and when my cousin paid,
he received checks back in the mail for overage. "Im not sure what was worse," he told me at one point, "going through all that pain in the hospital, or
going through the months of hassle during the follow-up." After going through this experience, my cousin had the strong belief that if his
medical records had been available, through electronic means, to these other physicians, and had the hospital had a cohesive billing program connected with the electronic records, a lot of frustration
