the Internet in order to obtain information or purchase products. In fact, the Internet has become such an integral part of many of our lives, people liberally go crazy
whenever e-mail is down and when they lose their access to the World Wide Web. Because of our dependence on the Web,
especially when it comes to purchasing goods and services, its hard to imagine a time during which we had no Internet and during which the idea of ordering online was
not a reality. Its also hard to imagine that the ability to order online has been around for less than a decade -- until the first Internet navigator was
introduced in 1994, getting online to do things took the brain of the computer programmer. The introduction of the navigator at the

play in formulating the concept. We will first examine a definition and history of both the technologies and e-commerce itself -- e-commerce as the concept is in itself not
necessarily a new one. We will then discuss types of technologies that can be considered emergent and then move onto competition in these fields.
