America in the 18th century, and a war was fought to give American citizens the right to vote. Yet three centuries later, only half of the population that is eligible
to vote actually turns out to do so. The main reason for this is voter apathy - and there are many causes and
reasons for such apathy. There are also those who point out that voting is inconvenient for many people - it involves having to take time off work, waiting in line
and so on. So many people dont bother. There has been a call from a handful of people to make Election Day
a federal holiday, in which everyone has the day off. The question we need to ask ourselves here is whether voter turnout will be higher if Election Day is actually
a federal day off. Will a day off on Election Day help decrease voter apathy? The contention of this paper is that it will not - there is nothing in
the statistical analysis that indicates that a day off, alone, will increase voter turnout. Election Day Overview How did Election Day come
to be on the first Tuesday in November? As with a variety of U.S. historical activities, it wasnt always that way. Beginning in 1792, the U.S. Congress allowed individual states
to have their elections within 34 days prior to the first week of December (Maughan). Lawmakers believed that November was a good month for a couple of reasons - one
