here provided by the student when possible, though weve merged topics "Intensity of hurricane season" and "storm variables," as these seem to overlap somewhat. INTRODUCTION
There is little doubt that the intensity of hurricane seasons can vary. During one period of years, there can be only a handful of named storms,
with few of them making landfall. Then there are seasons like 2004, during which there are huge numbers of storms, dangerous storms, and all targeting the U.S., Caribbean or other
similar areas. Scientists, for years, have tried to predict how each hurricane season will turn out - and the reactions have been
mixed. There are various predictors of hurricanes and how they develop, but many factors go into their maturation and movement. Even with this information, though, its still guesswork when it
comes to where such storms will end up. A hurricane (a Caribbean Indian word for "evil spirit and big wind") is a
large, rotating storm system that occur in oceans (Jackson State University, 2005). Because of the earths rotation, the storms spin counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere, and clockwise in the Southern
Hemisphere (Jackson State University, 2005). Hurricanes form incrementally -- beginning as a tropical disturbance, then a tropical depression (when a closed circulation
is noticed within the mass of organized, ocean-basted storms) -- and then a tropical storm when sustained winds reach 39 miles per hour (Jackson State University, 2005). The storm becomes
a hurricane when it reaches 74 mile-per-hour winds or faster (Jackson State University, 2005). Furthermore, the earths rotation is found to help
