flaps its wings, the flapping creates a small breeze. This breeze is then picked up by currents and jet streams, is expanded upon and eventually ends up a major hurricane
on the other side of the earth; a hurricane that does untold billions of dollars in damage. The butterfly theory, its said, is truth that climatic activities are interconnected and
interrelated, and that what goes on with one part of the earth will have an eventual impact on the other. Although the
butterfly theory isnt exactly provable (despite what scientists who embrace the "chaos" theory claim), What has been proven is that El Nino Southern Oscillation, also known as ENSO or simply
"El Nino," was held responsible for some terrible weather and climate phenomenon during 1997-1998-climate conditions that were more freakish and unusual during any time in memory.
For example, during this particular season of El Nino, fires burned out of control in Indonesia because the rains came late, due to the fact that
the warm water wasnt pushing against the shores of Southeast Asia as they typically do (Goreman, 1998). Meanwhile, smog covered the area from Malaysia to the Philippines, again, because of
no rain - and people died of starvation and disease from lack of water and lack of crops (Goreman, 1998). ENSO also
spawned huge and terrible storms. On the Mexican coast, Hurricane Pauline came ashore, killing 400 and injuring thousands (Goreman, 1998). Warm waters off the coast of California attracted tropical fish
that rarely had swam that far to the north, while calm seas in the Atlantic meant no hurricanes - at least during 1997 (Goreman, 1998). As well see later, 1998
