as to state that different ages will view various artistic endeavors differently than in the times in which they were created. This must certainly be the case with Ancient Egyptian
Shawabtis. It became evident during the first investigation that the human mind has a need to categorize similar objects according to a perceived style or time period. However,
humans also have the emotional side which reacts to a work of art. This emotional side is what lends meaning to the work of art. A shawabti
is a small statue that looks like a tiny sarcophagus. It was thought that the deceased would be asked to do work in the afterlife and that these small statuettes
would serve as a proxy, allowing the deceased person to live in the afterlife in a life of rest and leisure pursuits while the Shawabtis did the work(Shaw 2002).
There was also a spell or incantation spoken over the statuette to insure that it did its job in the afterlife. Whenever the deceased was told to
work in the afterlife, the shawabti was to answer in the loved ones stead. This spell was often inscribed directly on the statuette thus ensuring the figurines cooperation(Ancient Myths 2004).
This is the function of a shawabti, but does it really describe the way in which one was lovingly carved, placed, or the perspective/status of the art work?
Shawabtis are a bit different from ordinary artwork in that these pieces were also a great part of the religious belief system of the day in which they were created.
