terminally ill can be said to extend not only to the patient but also to the family and friends who must come to grips with the final days of a
loved one. During this critical time communication skills need to be utilized to educate, comfort, inform, and aid the family in understanding the options and scope of the process of
dying. THE STRATEGY OF EDUCATION Most people do not just suddenly become terminally ill. Those who enter the care of a facility and
come under the care of a terminal care nurse have, generally speaking, been struggling with a terminal illness for a while. The patient has had to deal with a series
of ups and owns involving his/her physical abilities and limitations, changes in emotional well-being, and spiritual crises. It is during this time that it can be said that knowledge is
power. Understanding the process of dying, of the progression that ones body may go through toward the end helps to remove the fear for the patient and the family.
Understanding that there is a step by step progression, both physically and psychologically, can be part of the nurses role in this familys
history. Because they will be a part of the last days of a patients life the nurse will forever become a part of the remembered history of the family. To
