is a plan providing a business case for adding Enhanced External Counter Pulsation (EECP) technology to the services offered by the hospital to treat coronary artery disease, specifically angina pectoris
and congestive heart failure. The income that the hospital can expect from offering this service is much less than that associated with invasive treatments such as bypass surgery and
angioplasty, but the greatly reduced cost of EECP treatment also makes it more accessible to those without sufficient insurance coverage and to those for whom insurers are reluctant to approve
more invasive approaches.1 To say that healthcare currently is in transition is an example of gross understatement. Public and teaching hospitals particularly
are caught in the upheaval of evolution, and many have been unprofitable for extended periods. Also within this atmosphere of evolution is the growing number of the working uninsured,
who still need care as much as anyone else - and perhaps even more than - who has private insurance coverage or has the support of public health systems.
In years past, angioplasty was touted as an alternative to bypass surgery as being less invasive for the patient, and less costly for "the
system." As angioplasty has progressed in its technological characteristics and has been subject to spiraling costs for several years, it no longer falls into the category of a less
costly approach. Enhanced External Counter Pulsation (EECP) technology holds promise of providing an alternative to both open heart surgery as well as angioplasty, and it holds an additional attraction
