people of that nation. Many people may not remember the rule of his predecessor, Josip Broz Tito, who ultimately helped bring communism to Yugoslavia and ruled that country for close to 30 years. One of Titos more valuable allies was a man named Edvard Kardelj, a Yugoslav politician who was a "behind-the-scenes" person who helped shape the countrys many policies during his years in the government. Kardelj was born on January 27, 1910 in Ljubljana, Yugoslavia, the son of a railroad worker (Edvard Kardelj, 2002; see also Edvard Kardelj: 1910-1979, 2002). He went to teachers training school and graduated from there in 1929 (Edvard Kardelj, 2002). But he learned more than teaching techniques while he was at school - he was a member of the illegal organization of communist youth - SKOJ - beginning in 1926, and in 1932, became a member of the countrys illegal Communist Party of Yugoslavia - CPY (Edvard Kardelj, 2002). He was jailed for his beliefs between 1930 and 1932 (Edvard Kardelj: 1910-1979). He traveled to the Soviet Union between 1934 and 1936, returning to Yugoslavia in 1937, where he then took on the role of member of the CPYs Central Committee from 1937 until his death in 1979 (Edvard Kardelj, 2002). It was during his time in the Soviet Union that Kardelj met Tito and was integrated into the future rulers circle of power (Edvard Kardelj: 1910-1979). He was an active participant in the Peoples Liberation War in 1941 as a member of the Supreme Command, a member of the Main Command of Slovenia and the Partisan Government (Edvard Kardelj, 2002; see also Kardelj, Edvard, 2001).
