After many years of violence, the groups declared a cease-fire in 1994, with the Belfast Agreement of 1998 leading to the establishment of the Northern Ireland Assembly, with power being
shared between many coalitions. The new coalition is still forming however, with the result being that uncertainty still exists. In addition, violence also still takes place, although not on the
same scale as it has. How, then, has the government dealt with this conflict and divisiveness on an educational level? For one
thing, since the Belfast Agreement, increased local control (from governmental control) has meant major reviews and revisions of the education system and how it has handled the political and social
conflicts of this particular nation (Arlow). One initiative that has been introduced in an attempt to reshape education policy in Northern Ireland and its conflicts are known as the Social,
Civil an Political Education Project (Arlow). Part of this project involves the teaching of issues that have been and continue to be related to the conflict (Arlow). The curriculum itself,
called the Local and Global Citizenship, is anticipated to become a specific part of the Northern Ireland Educational Curriculum by 2003 (Arlow).
Introduction of Citizenship has been set in the area of educational initiatives as well as policy change, focusing on community relations and Education for Mutual Understanding since the 1960s outbreak
of violence (Arlow). It has also been recommended that Citizenship be portrayed in a broader context of the entire curriculum (Arlow). As
