If they were housebound or simply did not feel like traveling anywhere, these shoppers could order catalogs and call 1-800 numbers to place the orders. Until about a
decade ago, the idea that people could order goods and services from their computers was considered science-fiction and not reality. There were too many complications inherent in such a method;
namely purchasing the product then getting it shipped from point A to point B. But as the Internet expanded, so did the
demand for the purchase of goods and services online. As can be expected in any industry, businesses sprung up on the Internet to meet these demands. Some of
these places, such as eToys.com and PetPlace.com collapsed during the late 1990s as the dot-com shakeout began taking form. But others, such as eBay.com and Amazon.com, have ended up
weathering the technological downturn and are working hard to attract more consumers and sellers to their Web sites. This is not to
say that everyone these days is online. According to recent statistics, only a small percentage of the worlds population has access to the Internet (leading to a whole host of
opportunities for many Internet companies). As more people launch into cyberspace, more companies are likely to spring up to meet the demand.
The primary purpose of this paper is to focus on eBay and its competition. Although eBay has billed itself from the beginning as an online auction site (with more
of a community feel than its competitors), there are some similarities between this Company and its competition -- similarities we will explore in this paper.
