came about, not solely because of internal problems. Deitrich Orlow, in his book A History of Modern Germany, 1871 to the Present, discusses asymmetrical modernization (especially in the time of
"two Germanys" when one half would be surging forward while the other lagged behind). Also a factor in divisiveness was the influence of outside countries.
Germany, always a country of "city-states" was further divided into zones following the Second World War ("Germany"). This was done, partly as a check to curb what
was feared might be a return of Nazi aggression, and partly as punishment of the nation. Exhausted and humiliated from the war and the betrayal of Adolph Hitler, and shellshocked
