turned to the new millennium, employees are consistently becoming disillusioned about the trustworthiness of the companies that employ them. From the Enron and WorldCom implosions due to accounting fraud to
bankruptcies and banking collapses in recent months, employees are finding less and less trust in the people who employ them, and with good reason (Gillespie and Dietz, 2009). In this
paper, the student has been asked to define how trust is earned in his/her organization. As its not clear on what type of organization this is (or what the executives
do there to create trust), well focus on the general issues of trust, and what is typically done to build it. Trust, first and foremost, comes from the top (Gillespie
and Dietz, 2009; see also Smirchich and Moran, 1982 and Kouzes and Posner, 2002). An employees relationship with the manager, and that managers relationship with those higher up in the
organization tends to at "as a lens through which the employee learns about and interprets the rest of the organization (Gillespie and Dietz, 2009, 131). If, however, employees have distrust
of their managers, this can also taint the employees perception of the company (Kouzes and Palmer, 2002). But its the management that leads the way, both through spoken and unspoken
actions, by clearly stating what is expected from employees and even what unethical behaviors might be tolerated (Gillespie and Dietz, 2009; see also Dickson et al, 2001). In Enrons situation,
for example, what was expected was that associates make money, and as much as possible. Enrons senior management wasnt too picky about how this money was to be made, however
(as was proven later on through its behavior. This leads us to the next topic of building trust, which is the importance of culture and climate (Gillespie and Dietz, 2009).
