perceived as too specialised for widespread use, it has become commonplace in a number of applications, such as tourism. The most effective GIS system for the use of the tourist
would be a handheld computer which can access accurate, up-to-date information regarding location, and which can combine route finding and information services with interactive capacity. For example, one should be
able to find a restaurant, book a table and access directions from ones current location. Or, one could get directions to a museum, check the website for opening time, and
access additional data on particular exhibits. There are already numerous websites which are geared towards offering a wide range of information for the tourist: Durham
County Councils website, for example, or London sites such as buzzlondon and wired Whitehall. Digital geographical information systems are digitised maps which form the heart of route-finding systems when they
are used in combination with global positioning satellite techniques. Also, at any given point on a map there will be extra layers of information which can be accessed by various
means, such as hyperlinks. The information could include the location of restaurants, tube stations or other transport facilities, hotels, tourist attractions and so on.
It is also possible to include information on specific features, such as the history of a statue or why a particular street bears its name. Such interactive databases are useful
