lead to these feelings regardless of whether they are justified or not. In order to consider whether setting up an online or e-commerce operation is wise the security matters should
be considered alone with other issues that pertain to the running of an online business, such as The Data Protection Act 1998 and the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000.
This should also be balanced with the potential that the internet has to create sales, even if there are some risks, the current sheer level of trading indicates that many
companies find ways to overcome these risks and find their exposure acceptable. The industry may also be seen as having passed through the initial development period when it can be
argued the risks were greater due to the immaturity of the systems and protection that were ion place. Criminals have since become more sophisticated, but so that the system put
in place to protect companies and consumers. To examine this we can look initially at security and the prevalence of crime on the internet and then consider the issues of
the Data Protection Act and the Distance Selling Regulations. There are many cases of fraud reported in the newspapers focusing on the
internet and like any other sales medium there are a number of criminals that will target companies and consumers on this medium. We have seen computer crime go through several
stages, just as the technology has developed, so has the usage and understanding of those who seek to misuse technology for their own means. The first stage was that of
